The Turin Olympic Village will provide lodgings for 2,500 athletes. The project for the Village was awarded on the basis of an international tender. The area where the Village will be constructed - adjacent to the Lingotto and linked by a walkway to the Turin 2006 General Head Quarter - measures more than one hundred thousand sq. m with, at the centre, the former structure of the General Market that dates back to 1934 and which will be restored. During the Games, this structure will become a service area and will house the logistics centre, the shopping centre, the recreation area reserved for the athletes and staff and a large parking lot. The Village will comprise the accreditation centre, an approx. 1,500 sq. m shopping centre, a refectory for the athletes and team managers, medical and massage facilities, areas reserved for Village staff and others for recreation. Lodgings for 2,500 athletes will be built around the centre. The same complex will also house a Media Village. The Village will be constructed in accordance with ???bio-architectural??? criteria using solar panels and photo-voltaic cells, with a tele-heating network and solar systems for ventilation that are expected to promote an around 60% reduction in energy consumption and pollutants. After the Games, the Village will become a major asset of the city, converted partly into residential accommodation and partly into a centre for research facilities and advanced services.
